Missouri Artist Creates Dolls With Vitiligo

Kay Customz dolls

Artist Kay Black is shaking up the doll industry.

As the owner of Kay Customz, the Kansas City entrepreneur creates personalized dolls for burn victims and people with albinism and vitiligo.

These dolls celebrate diversity and beauty for children and adults alike and have resonated with fans online. Black’s Instagram page, barely a year old, already boasts thousands of fans.

Kay Customz joins companies like Malaville and Izuki Dolls in offering more balanced and brown options for our little ones. Representation is important. Especially for young black children.

If you’re not in the market for a doll, no worries. You can also buy a custom necklace or a pair of dope wooden earrings from Black’s shop. I may or may not have my eyes on these.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE these, especially the ones by Kay!

I think I’m reasonably knowledgeable (not to toot my own horn lol), but I didn’t know much about vitiligo until relatively recently. I knew it existed and had seen people with it, but that was about the extent of my knowledge.

I think things like this can go a long way in raising awareness of people with vitiligo, and show them that it’s not a reason to treat people differently. We’re all people, we all look different. And there is beauty in that alone.

I’d love to see these go mainstream, who knows, maybe in ten years from now they may be.

    • I agree about raising awareness. After reading about Kay’s dolls I did some research on vitiligo out of curiosity.

I love that her dolls serve a very specific and overlooked niche. And the fact that each one is handmade and custom is awesome. Plus they’re dressed do fly lol

Thank you for dropping by and commenting.
