Talent, spunk, and fabulous hair…model Nikia Phoenix has it all. She’s been featured on The Tyra Banks Show, in Glamour magazine, and in campaigns for Carol’s Daughter and Dutch mega retailer Wehkamp. Nikia sits down with us over lunch and dishes about the big chop, PJism, and self-acceptance.

How long have you been natural? And what made you decide to stop relaxing?

I have been chemical free for about 4 1/2 years. I’d thought about going natural for a while. I was very curious to see my curl pattern as I’d had a relaxer since I was six. I was all tired of all the damage my hair was going through because of the shoots and runway shows, so I had to chop it off.

I sort of did the big chop. I chopped the sides and the back but the top was still a little bit longer [and relaxed]. I wore it kinda funky for a little bit. My hair was also shorter so it was an easier transition. Once it started growing out more I chopped the straight pieces off.

Are there any products you love and swear by for your hair?

I don’t think I swear by anything, to be honest. I’m sort of a product junkie, so if somebody gives me something I’m definitely going to try it.

I’ve worked with Free Your Mane have a lot of their products that I use. I also use Carol’s Daughter because I’m doing a new campaign with them. And I use a lot of Trader Joe’s, in particular their tea tree conditioner.

Nikia Phoenix Profile

Do you have a nighttime routine? Do you tie it up or anything?

I just go to bed. I went natural and kept it short so I wouldn’t have to do that. Twenty years of wrapping your hair up, silk scarves, satin pillowcases… Nobody has time for all of that!

Tell us how you became a fabulous model. Was it something you’d always wanted to do?

I have wanted to model since I was a teenager. It didn’t happen immediately, but it did kind of fall into my lap when it was supposed to. I guess that was about eight years ago.

The owner of Alternative Apparel approached me and we started talking about t-shirts.At the time I was studying fashion design. He mentioned that he was doing a photo shoot for his company the following week and asked me if I was willing to model for it. I said yes.

Any advice for new naturals or those right on the brink?

It’s just hair. It’s our crown and glory but it’s just hair. It’s gonna grow back.
