1 How long have you been natural? Did you transition? And if so, how?

I have been natural since September 2006 so a little over four years.  I transitioned for 6 months.  I wore half wigs mainly and I got braids one or two times.

2 Describe your hair in three words.

Big, thick and beautiful.

3 How are you currently wearing your hair? What is your hair routine? What products do you use?

I am currently wearing my hair in twists.  I have a fairly simple routine.  I wash and condition my hair with a sulfate free shampoo and Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner.  After I am done, I usually style my hair in a protective style using Worlds of Curls Curl Activator gel and Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera gel and wear that for about 1-3 weeks.  I take the style down and then repeat.  Pretty simple.

I also usually spritz my hair with a homemade spritz during the week as needed.  Those are all the products I use on a normal basis and all I usually do to my hair. I just wake up and go.

4 Name one thing that you learned about your hair after becoming a natural.

My hair is beautiful just as it is.  I don’t have to wear it straight for it to be acceptable and beautiful.  Nappy hair is good hair.

6 A final word of advice for new naturals?

Enjoy your hair at every stage.  Enjoy it while it is short and enjoy it as you grow it longer.  A lot of times we have dreams of having the biggest, baddest afro and we never take the time out to enjoy the twa because we have long hair dreams.  Enjoy the easy detangling sessions, styling sessions, and everything else.  Love your hair at every stage.

  2. Really good hair advice. I’m finding that the longer & thicker my hair gets, the harder it becomes to do myself, so appreciation for the stage your hair is at is key. And yeah. I definitely have a tinge of hair envy at the twistouts. 🙂
