Unbeweaveable

How do you feel about braids and weaves?

Now before I get on my soapbox, y’all know I can’t even front. Everything from black and white cornrows (yes, white ) to shellacked swoop bangs and freeze-dried curls, I’ve done it all.

So I’m definitely not a stranger to foreign hair.

However, now that I’m chemical-free, I’ve found that I’m not too fond of fake hair anymore. I think the change occurred when I started dreading.

Before then, when I was a loose natural, I may have at least entertained the idea of getting braids or maybe even donning a wig.

Now, it just seems strange and unattractive.

What’s particularly odd is my aversion to braids on grown women. I say this is odd because I wore a braided bob almost exclusively for about two years straight. And aren’t dreads almost like permanent braids? 😕

Now I don’t like to see extension braids on adults. At all. Again, I don’t know why this is.

I don’t knock anyone for what they do their hair and I’m not one who thinks natural hair is the be-all end-all. It’s just not something that appeals to me anymore.

How do you feel about fake hair? Has your opinion changed since becoming natural? Would you be open to wearing some?

  1. I just had this conversation with someone. She suggested that I get extensions for the winter, and I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea. I have had them many times in my life, but I can’t see it now. I have never worn a wig, and I can’t see that either. I don’t judge when other naturals wear them, but it’s not for me.

Same here. Like I said, I’m not a stranger to it but it just doesn’t seem to fit me anymore.

I’ve been there, done that, with wearing fake hair for most of my life until i finally decided to be natural. I don’t have a strong resentment about having worn fake hair or seeing others wear fake hair, but I can’t say that I miss it, that’s for sure. I would never go back to wearing fake hair again, never.

I don’t know if I would, either. Color, maybe. A cut, probably. But extra hair, not so sure.

The need for weave, extentions, and wigs have left me now that I’ve been locked. I am a former weave, wig, and braid wearer (everyday). It was like I just woke up one day and didn’t need them anymore. It wasn’t a conscience effort on my part, the desire was just gone one day. I even tried to fight it! Since my locs were so short I thought I’d sport a wig just to give myself a boost but hated the look! Then I tried to wear yarn braids to make my locs look longer but still have the same natural look but that only lasted about 8 or 9 days. I don’t judge those who wear it, I felt like I needed to for YEARS! I’m just so thankful to be free from it all! I get those stares and many just don’t understand why I would stop combing my hair rather than just continue to chemically burn myself then glue synthetic strands to my scalp like everyone else. LOL, I don’t miss it:)

    • Hi, Bwn,
So it looks like we are both recovering addicts 🙂 Like you, something changed when I chopped. Even when my hair was short-short I never felt the need for additions.

Thanks for joining the conversation and I hope you’ll stop by again son.
