1 How long have you been natural? Did you transition? And if so, how?

I did my own big chop in Oct. of 2005. I hadn’t had a relaxer in over 2 months.  I tried to transition with braids and straw sets, but my patience was thin. I eventually took the scissors and started with the front.  I had less than an inch of hair. I loved my twa. I loc’d my hair for about 1 year & 7 months and then I combed them out. July 2011 will be 1 year without them.

2 Describe your hair in three words.

Strong. Unpredictable. Beautiful.

3 How are you currently wearing your hair? What is your hair routine? What products do you use?

Right now I’m in love with twist outs. I can wear them for up to 2 weeks and then I swoop it over into a side puff when it gets older.  I don’t do much to my hair. I don’t like spending a lot of money on hair products and I usually find something I like and stick to it for a while.  I only shampoo when I absolutely need to. I use Shea It Again hair conditioner by Beautiful Brown Baby Doll and I also use Motions conditioner.

As for butters, I use Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter moisturizer and Shea-Lovely Intensive Therapy and Leave-in, also by Beautiful Brown Baby Doll. Both leave my hair so soft and moisturized. I will also do a blow-out maybe once a month for certain styles.

4 Name one thing that you learned about your hair after becoming a natural.

It’s more than just a hairstyle, it’s a lifestyle. You have to be ready to live it or it might not be for you.

6 A final word of advice for new naturals?

You have to be patient. Hair growth is not the same for everyone. Your hair texture is not the same as your friend’s, so try not to compare. Embrace your hair for what it is and work with what you were given. It’s not a contest. Just have fun with your hair and be free.

  1. Her hair is so beautiful! I can’t believe she can get two weeks out of a twist-out. I would love that.
